Hey all. I started my dogs on a raw diet on, I believe it was Tuesday, the 14th. They so far have had just chicken with a liver bit of organs and an egg. I am going shopping for a little variety tomorrow probably and am wondering what is a good thing to start them on next? And how often can they get organs?
The main question is how long do dogs normally detox? My male who has always had very itchy skin is still having that issue. My oldest female is having *very* gunky eyes. Both are nine and that we know of have been on Nutro Natural Choice and Dick Van Patten’s Grain-Free. Before adopting them not sure of what they were eating but it couldn’t be good.
My pup (17 months) is having only a little bit of gunky eyes. The majority of her food history is Wellness CORE and before rescuing her she was on Red Flannel.
Are these issues just detoxing? That would explain why my older dogs are having it worse since they were on crappy food much longer. Just wondering how long detoxing is on average.
Oh and I haven’t checked much recently but in the beginning I found some little pieces of bone in their stools… is this okay or something to worry about?
Thanks so much!
Any extra advice is always appreciated.
Some dogs can take 5-6 weeks to detox. Others get through much sooner. I guess it has to do with the health and condition of the dogs when they start on the raw diet.
I blend up a small quantity of raw vegies to a pulp and add a whole egg to approx 1 Kg (2.2 pound) of the mix. I also add in some fat free live culture yoghurt and a little cold pressed flaxseed oil. My dogs don’t have allergies so I alternate between turkey, chicken, beef and lamb. I don’t feed raw pork and kangaroo gives them loose stools so that’s out too.
Organ meat - I feed a small amount twice a week but I cook it because I hate handling it raw. The butcher chops it for me and I tip it into a pot without having to touch it.
My dogs get a raw meaty bone every day. It keeps the teeth in good condition. Don’t worry about little pieces of bone in the stool. The dogs digestive system is designed to cope with bone….as long as it’s raw and not cooked.
I usually make up a fairly large batch and freeze in meal size containers.
You’re doing a good job and you’ll see an overall improvement in your dogs before long.
