40 day water fast for detox and weightloss?

November 5, 2009 - 12:23 am 7 Comments

I really would like to embark on a 40 day water fast for weight loss and to detox. After wards I plan on switching to a raw vegan diet. Given the fact that I am changing my eating habits, is water fasting an effective weight loss method?
I would like to lose at least 40 pounds I currently weight 130 and am 5′1.
While on my fast I plan to go on an hour long walk everyday.

I’m in exactly the same position at the moment only different stats and I’ve tried a 10 day fast before.

After the 10 days, i felt incredible! it was aw some, i lost about a 1.5 pounds a day…. BUT- once i ate my first tea-spoon of food i went completely berserk. i ate everything in sight and gained all the weight back and felt absolutely miserable.

In the meantime I’ve done some research (should’ve done before hand) and found that ‘Breaking the fast’ is universally the hardest bit.

ANYWAY- i was thinking it would make it much easier if we had someone in the same boat, so if you wanna be ‘fasting buddies’…. hit me up k?

Best of luck otherwise anyway! : ) in answer to your question, YES it is so worth it, YES it works, and NO it is no way near as hard as it sounds…. only once you finish do things get sketchy.

Which detox method and duration?

October 17, 2009 - 1:12 am 6 Comments

I want to detox before I become raw vegan (I am already vegan). So far I am looking at either: juice in general, water-only, lemon juice or raw fruits and veggies method. Does have any experience and know which method is best (or another better method) or how long I should go for? And how much I should excersise during my detox?

I agree with GivePeasAChance. You should only have to detox if what you have been eating has something to detox out of you.

If you want to do a juice/liquid fast, then I recommend a lot of apple juice (for pectin which is good for the colon, for more available enzymes) with any juice or water in between. One of my favorites is fresh carrot juice with a bit of ginger and cucumber. All pure juices have different benefits, so use them all. I recommend that you limit or eliminate exercise while on a juice fast. Your muscles and body will not be able to function and repair in a healthy way without proper nutrition. I like to meditate in place of exercise; cleanse the soul when you cleanse the body.

Juices have incomplete The problem with juices is that you loose some of the benefits that the raw or whole fruit provides, such as fiber (a big loss) and others. Limit the fast to three days plus or minus a day (your body requires more nutrients than the juice can provide after that).

Most importantly, listen to your body. It can tell you more than what I can. I can only provide a guideline. Also, remember that moderation resonates with our bodies.

Raw dog diet… detox?

September 26, 2009 - 6:53 am 4 Comments

Hey all. I started my dogs on a raw diet on, I believe it was Tuesday, the 14th. They so far have had just chicken with a liver bit of organs and an egg. I am going shopping for a little variety tomorrow probably and am wondering what is a good thing to start them on next? And how often can they get organs?

The main question is how long do dogs normally detox? My male who has always had very itchy skin is still having that issue. My oldest female is having *very* gunky eyes. Both are nine and that we know of have been on Nutro Natural Choice and Dick Van Patten’s Grain-Free. Before adopting them not sure of what they were eating but it couldn’t be good.

My pup (17 months) is having only a little bit of gunky eyes. The majority of her food history is Wellness CORE and before rescuing her she was on Red Flannel.

Are these issues just detoxing? That would explain why my older dogs are having it worse since they were on crappy food much longer. Just wondering how long detoxing is on average.

Oh and I haven’t checked much recently but in the beginning I found some little pieces of bone in their stools… is this okay or something to worry about?

Thanks so much! :) Any extra advice is always appreciated.

Some dogs can take 5-6 weeks to detox. Others get through much sooner. I guess it has to do with the health and condition of the dogs when they start on the raw diet.

I blend up a small quantity of raw vegies to a pulp and add a whole egg to approx 1 Kg (2.2 pound) of the mix. I also add in some fat free live culture yoghurt and a little cold pressed flaxseed oil. My dogs don’t have allergies so I alternate between turkey, chicken, beef and lamb. I don’t feed raw pork and kangaroo gives them loose stools so that’s out too.

Organ meat - I feed a small amount twice a week but I cook it because I hate handling it raw. The butcher chops it for me and I tip it into a pot without having to touch it.
My dogs get a raw meaty bone every day. It keeps the teeth in good condition. Don’t worry about little pieces of bone in the stool. The dogs digestive system is designed to cope with bone….as long as it’s raw and not cooked.
I usually make up a fairly large batch and freeze in meal size containers.
You’re doing a good job and you’ll see an overall improvement in your dogs before long.

When vegan / raw foodists speak of "detox", what are they talking about? What happens in Detox stage?

September 11, 2009 - 2:41 am 5 Comments

I have been vegetarian in the past for about 20 years. A sort of lacto-ovo junk food vegetarian..As for toxins, there are medications that they give animals to fatten them up (hormones), antibiotics to prevent infections in overcrowded animal factories (so to speak), and then also you are eating higher up on the food chain with meat, so you are eating supposedly more toxins that the animal has concentrated in their tissues (such as herbacides, insecticides in their grain or grass/hay that they eat and the water that they drink). Also could be parasites in the meat if not cooked properly (esp. pork). Also there is nitrates/nitrites in cured meats and fried meats sometimes, which is also considered toxins. There are also food colorings, curative additives, preservatives, etc. When I first went veg, I gave up meat for about a week and then I craved it something awful, so I decided to finish off the hamburger in my freezer. I slept all day. Not sure if this was the tryptophan in the meat or something else. The hormones can make you fat, as the cow is fattened by them or other side effects. The antibiotics can remain in the meat somewhat in varying degrees and lead to side effects and also add to the increase of superinfections, such as MRSA (people overusing antibiotics also contributes to these superinfections being on the rise.My understanding of the herbicides and insecticides is that they are in all tissues but especially fatty tissues, so that when you lose weight also you should be detoxing some of these. The liver stores toxins, so if you like to eat liver, you get more of these toxins in meat.Detox is starting to lower the amounts of these various toxins in your body by going vegan (or raw food) and probably also by losing weight and drinking sufficient water or juices. The fiber in the vegan/raw food diets also help to absorb toxins from the colon and flush them from there. Some people sell detox powders/elixirs/pills….oftentimes these contain laxatives such as senna or similar concoctions. Other people go on different types of fasts to detox. Moderation is the key to good health. If you want to read up on it, try vegetarian books by Gary and Steve Null. There was one that really told a lot about the toxins in meat..don’t remember the name…but they wrote many books. What happens in detox depends on what type of detox you do, what nutrients and vitamins and minerals and quality and amounts of proteins you are taking in, your general health, etc. With the laxative detoxes….well goes without saying…With meat eating the colon slows down and holds toxins in there longer because fiber is not helping to move things along and fiber would also help to absorb the toxins in the gut. Of course most meat eaters eat some fiber, but not as much as someone eating beans and grains and fruits and vegetables. The theory is it might help keep colon cancer away also to move things thru the digestive tract faster instead of everything you ate just sitting there for 2 or 3 days.I am not an expert, just a former vegetarian who is trying to get back to that. Of course vegetarians aren’t immune to food problems. Many vegetables are grown with herbicides, fertilizers (animal manure, which can have virulent strains of ecoli in it and can get on lettuce…just as it has been found in hamburgers). Which reminds me of a 60 minutes show where they went to a chicken slaughtering plant and figured out that when the chickens are slaughtered, some of the chicken manure is left on the meat and as the chicken carcasses are washed together in a big vat of sorts, they said that salonella in the chicken manure is distributed all over all the carcasses pretty much…so samonella and ecoli are two other potential toxins.Sorry so wordy…got off on tangents..hope this helps.PS Especially if you have a medical condition , check with your doctor for advice before doing anything major.

Why do you have to eat raw fruits and veges on a detox?

September 2, 2009 - 8:00 am 2 Comments

Why can’t you cook them? its really hard to eat raw brocoli, beans, etc?

They’re loaded with antioxidants and amino acids, and have innate cleansing properties that aid in the detoxification of the body. Cooking generally compromises the quantity of vitamins and minerals available in the fruits & veggies, as much is lost and "cooked away" so to speak.

Fruits and veggies are also 80-85% water, which is essential during any detox program. Not to mention they’re rapidly digested and pass through the body easily, making the entire process of elimination run a lot smoother while you’re body is undergoing it’s much-deserved cleansing :)

I like to mix organic raw beans, almonds, spinach, etc.. and toss them with with some extra virgin olive oil, sea salt, pepper, garlic, etc.. it’s all about seasoning and bringing out the natural flavors of those raw goodies :)
